    Classroom Rules

    1. Be respectful of yourself, others and property.
    2. Be prompt.
    3. Be responsible (report writing on desk).

    5. Keep cell phone and earbuds away (not visible) in the classroom.

    Classroom Procedures

    1. Enter quietly.
    2. Get your assigned book from shelves if needed or Chrombook from the cart.
    3. Go directly to your assigned seat.
    4. Log into assigned Chromebook.
    5. Put cell phone and earbuds away before entering the classroom.
    6. Place all items in the cubby except textbook, folder with paper, and writing utensil.
    7. At the end of class, log out of Chromebook.
    8. Roll chair under table & check for writing on table. (except 7th period, put chair on table.)
    9. Use restroom and get water between classes.
    10. Do not touch water or gas knobs unless instructed.

     

    Teaching Rules/Procedures:

    1. Refrain from talking when the teacher is speaking, teaching, reading, or when other students are reading or presenting.
    2. Cell phone and ear buds away (not visible) until you leave the room.
    3. Anytime a student misses class due to a school function, he/she is expected to be prepared for the next class session. Look on Canvas for assignments. Homework and class work should be secured before the date of absence.
    4. If excused absence due to illness, check Canvas for assignments. Two days for each day of absence shall be given to complete all make-up work. Complete “Assignments to Check” clipboard in classroom.
    5. All policies set forth by Charlotte High School, as well as those discussed in the Student Code of Conduct handbook, will be the main guidelines for class procedures.

    Course Description

    Course Number: 2002515

    Number of Credits: 1

    Course Length: 1 year

    Cambridge International AS Level Marine Science provides a coherent and stimulating introduction to the science of the marine environment. The emphasis throughout is on the understanding of concepts and the application of ideas to new contexts. It is expected that practical activities will underpin the teaching of the whole course. Students will have the opportunity to earn college credit by passing the exams in the spring.

     

    Course Objectives and Outline:

    The course will be divided into two basic categories:

    Practical Skills: Experimental planning (making estimates, predictions and hypothesis), presentation of data & observations, evaluation of procedures and data, analysis of data and conclusions.

    AS Level: Classification and Biodiversity, Examples of Marine Ecosystems, Water, Earth Processes, Interactions in Marine Ecosystems

    1. Enter quietly.

    2. Get your assigned book from the closet if needed.

    3. Read and take a picture of the front board.

    4. Go directly to your assigned seat.

    5. Log into your assigned Chromebook.

    6. Put cell phone and earbuds in bin in the center of the table on test/quiz days (must remain in bins during tests and quizzes until everyone is finished) or away in backpack.  This does not mean in your pocket, Not Visible!

    7. Place all items in the cubby except textbook, folder with paper, and writing utensil.  

    8. At the end of class, return your book to the closet unless you are taking it home, check your area, throw away papers/trash and sign out of Chromebooks.

    9. Roll chair under table & check for writing on table. 

    10. Use restroom and get water between classes.

    11. Do not touch water or gas knobs unless instructed.

    Grading Scale

    Tests 100 points each A=90-100

    Quizzes 1 point each word B=80-89

    Individual Assignments 5 points each C=70-79

    Active Reading 5 points each D=60-69

    Practical Skills & Projects 5-25 points each F=59 and below

    Canvas Assignments 5-10 points each section

    Notebook Checks 5-25 points each time

    ***Grade will be calculated by dividing the total points earned by the total points possible***

     

    Make-Up Work will be provided for all students; however, no activities or assignments can replace the learning that occurs in the classroom when the student is present.  Two (2) days for each day of eligible absences shall be given to complete all class make-up work.  NO OTHER LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED! Exams, tests, or quizzes & practical skills will be rescheduled at the discretion of the teacher, and must be completed in the classroom within 5 days of the student’s return to school.  If a student is absent due to a school activity, work is due the day they return.  This includes test, quiz & practical make-ups. All assignments are on Canvas so it is your responsibility to check the site daily, especially if you are absent. Be sure to send me a Remind message if you have internet issues at home.

     

    Course Procedures

    This is a self-directed class with several individual assignments. During the course, students will read, actively read, complete practical skills and projects, and complete Canvas assignments while working individually as well as in groups.  Students are expected to study at home daily for quizzes and tests, which must be taken in my classroom, and to complete all assignments on time.  All assignments are on Canvas.  Students are also expected to participate in class, keep track of their progress in FOCUS, and view their Canvas account daily for assignments and announcements.

    College Credit: To earn college credit, students must pass the two AICE Exams given April 29 & May 5. There are not any make-up dates for these exams! 

     

    SCUBA Certification: We will work on the written part on-line in class after the AICE Exams. We partner with Fantasea Scuba located at 3762 Tamiami Trail Suite B Port Charlotte, FL  33952.  Last year the cost for the entire course, certification, mask, fins and snorkel was $350.  Feel free to contact them with any questions (941) 627-3888.
