It will contain mail, flyers, and other information in the front pocket. The back of the folder will contain their behavior chart. Our classroom uses a daily behavior chart that is to remain in your childs folder for the week to document how each day of the school week went. I use a happy, straight, and sad face to represent how their overall day went. If your child receives a yellow face it simply means they had difficulty with following rules, remaining seated when needed, or they needed several reminders or directions. It does not mean they needed to be disciplined. You can simply ask your child what happened and remind them to try next time for a happy face. I dont send notes home for straight faces nor expect them to have consequences at home for a straight face. If your child receives a red sad face, they really struggled with following classroom expectations. I will write a quick note as to why they are on red. You can help by discussing this at home. At school your child will have received a time out or other appropriate consequence. Usually students do not want to be on red because it also means a loss of treasure box item at the end of the week and/or special reward time in class. Children who struggle with disruptive behavior will be given infraction reports. These are steps we use to help curb disruptive behavior and three infractions will lead to a large referral and the office will be notified. I reserve infraction reports for more severe behaviors. If your child receives a referral we would need to talk about how to best work with your child on a more individual approach. Consequences for Unacceptable Behaviors Occasionally children have difficulty following class rules and procedures. At the start of kindergarten there is generally a few weeks where students are unsure and cautious of how they should behave. They are getting to know each other and their new teacher. Children tend to do very well at this time. After a few weeks they generally become very comfortable and begin to explore boundaries. You may find your child doing well and then begin to see the weekly report reflect some difficulties, much like they do at home. This is quite normal. ` There are many ways we try to work with students to help to adjust. Here are a few ways we as teachers may redirect students. Some are: Conference with teacher (teacher and student talk about what occurred and no further actions are needed) Time to reflect away from group (provided another activity) Time out for five minutes Time to reflect in another teachers classroom Note, phone call home, conference with parents (when behavior is continuing or is hurtful to others) Loss of privileges/loss of treasure box Time-out in office This will be used if the behavior is severe or has been repeated. This may also be used if the previous consequences have not been effective. (ex: disruption of another teachers room. Office Referral Office referrals are generally given after all other avenues have been tried. However, if a child is harming or threatening another child or the teacher they may be given a referral due to the severity of the behavior.
