The Do the Right Thing of Charlotte County recognition ceremony was held on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at Florida Southwestern State College. The following students were recognized:

Abigail Eason, Grade 10, Charlotte High School

Abigail was honored for seeing something and saying something. At the end of 3rd period Abigail Eason and Samantha Lobb, both Freshmen, approached me. They reported that a student sitting in front of them appeared to have a "Butterfly" knife in his cargo shorts pocket. The student in question had been absent for a few days. Just prior to this, he said he was not feeling good and asked for a pass to see the School Nurse. After he left, they told me. I immediately called for assistance and also called and advised the Nurse of the situation and asked her to keep him in the clinic until security arrived. Abigail and Samantha did what we ask of our students to protect each other. This was not an active incident, but it is good to know there are students like Abigail and Samantha who think about and care for the safety of their fellow students and Charlotte High.

Layla Parsons, Grade 5, Meadow Park Elementary School

Layla was honored for her compassion for others. Layla witnessed other students saying some unkind words to a girl. The girl told Layla what the boys had said, and Layla gave her a hug and told her " Don't listen to them. They're not nice. You matter to me. I will be your friend". I told Layla that I am so proud of her trying to comfort the girl and that she definitely “Did the Right Thing".

Benjamin Prachniak, Grade 9, Port Charlotte High School

Ben was honored for his integrity. Ben found a debit card on campus that an employee had lost. He did not know whose card it was, but knowing it was important to whoever had lost it, he turned it into the office.
Had a dishonest person found this card, it could have been a disaster for the card owner. However, since Ben turned it in, the employee was overwhelmed with happiness to have it returned.

Kervens Rosemond, Grade 5, Kingsway Elementary School

Kervens was honored for constantly setting a good example. Kervens is a joy to have at Kingsway Elementary School. He is always respectful and willing to help in any way he can. Kervens serves as a safety patrol and frequently goes above and beyond what is asked of him. He can often be seen helping smaller children get where they need to go without anyone telling him to help. Kervens approaches every task with a smile and is encouraging to those around him. He sets a great example for his classmates just by being himself every day.
